California surprisingly has a variety of old windmills still standing throughout the state. And that doesn't even take into account the windmills that are contributing to the power grid by generating more than seven percent of the state's electrical power. If you're interested in that, much of California's wind generation can be found near Tehachapi in Kern County, although other large wind farms are also in Solano, Riverside, and Contra Costa counties.

As to old style windmills, at least 13 still stand in the state, almost half of those being located just in the Danish town of Solvang, which accounts for a full six windmills! And that's not all, yet another old style windmill is located in Buelton, just west of Solvang. You can literally see more than half the windmills on this list just by driving to two next door towns.

The remaining six windmills, however, are scattered around the state. Two more windmills are located in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco where they were formerly utilized to pump water for the giant park. Another windmill can be found in Arcadia on top of a Denny's, formerly a Vandekamp Restaurant. Two windmills are located on top of Pea Soup Andersen (or former) restaurants in Selma and Santa Nella, although ironically the Pea Soup Andersen's in Buelton has no windmill, perhaps they thought there were already too many in the nearby area, as the Buelton windmill is literally located down the street. Finally, a thirteenth windmill exists, but it's hard to see as tree cover protects it from prying eyes. It is called Lake Shrine located on Sunset Boulevard in Pacific Palisades.
