Redwood City Shadow Art
Redwood City, California
94063
(Location is middle of downtown)
Originally, sometime in 2016 more than twenty different wacky art pieces were installed throughout the downtown area of Redwood City. All 23 of the whimsical art pieces were unique, weird shadow art, or an art effect made to look like a shadow of some item downtown. Benches, mailboxes, bike racks, poles, parking kiosks, all suddenly were given new bizarre and permanent shadows! In these interesting and strange shadows, robots danced, monkeys greeted people, an octopus emerged from under a bench, flowers grew from bike racks, and ghosts haunted mailboxes. All were flat, stencil drawn onto the sidewalk, with the artist first creating a chalk outline before using dark grey paint to fill it in. They are spread around downtown, and make for a fun outing looking for all of them.
The work is the art of one Damon Belanger, who also did the Go With the Flow crosswalk in Palo Alto! Belanger stated that "The shadows give regular, mundane objects a lively spirit so people can have a little fun in their everyday life." The Redwood City Improvement Associated donated $30,000 for the installation.
Some of the artwork may have already been demolished from improvements and construction downtown, although Belanger does try and touch up or replace pieces if this occurs. There is a map online showing all the locations of the shadow art.
