Long Beach Skinny House
708 Gladys Avenue,
Long Beach, California
90804
There's a super skinny house located in Long Beach! Unimaginatively nicknamed "Skinny House", the house is certainly one of the skinniest houses in all of America, being only ten feet wide! There are two bedrooms (one with a beamed and vaulted ceiling), one bath, and even a deck located up on the third floor.
Way back in 1932, the house was literally built as a dare and is 860 square feet. Newton P. Rummonds ended up with the little ten by fifty foot plot of land as payment for a $100 loan, and was then betted that he couldn't build a livable house on it. The lot only existed due to a surveying mistake that ended up creating it.
The house became a registered city landmark of Long Beach in 1983. Note, the house is occupied, so don't disturb the occupants. Rumor has it that back in the fifties a family of six lived in the skinny structure! The house is technically not a Spite House, as it wasn't built out of spite! For one of those, check out the Spite House in Alameda!
